“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, …and love your neighbor as yourself.” – Mark 12:30-31
Years ago, before they had modern construction techniques, tools, and equipment, builders were trying to build a bridge across Niagara River. The biggest problem was how to span the raging river with the bridge’s huge suspension cables. They came up with the idea of launching a simple children’s kite. They let it fly and crash on the other side, and thus, there was a string that spanned the river. Using the string they then drew a rope across, which was followed by a larger rope, then a small cable, and finally a cable heavy enough to use in building the bridge. When the bridge was completed, everyone forgot that the huge structure that could support the heaviest trains was begun with a simple string from a kite. To do a great work you must begin small and then keep it simple. We humans have a way of complicating that which is simple, of making complex things that are not all that hard. Sometimes I think we have made Christianity way too complicated. The reality is, Christianity is simple. Jesus said, “Love God with every ounce of your being, and love your neighbor.” Keep it simple. Love God, and just love people. If we were all to do that, our lives would be better and the world would be a better place to live. Let’s start today.
