In my first year of seminary, I was serving as a youth pastor of a church in Marietta, Georgia. Across the street from the Methodist Church was a very strong and vibrant Baptist church. I do not know what happened, but apparently they got to arguing among themselves about something, and the argument turned into a big church fight. It was ugly. Friends and family members split up. The fight went on for about six months. After six months, the church split and several hundred people went about a half a mile down the road and started a new church. Do you know what they named it? Harmony Baptist.
Harmony is something all of us want in our lives. Who doesn’t want peace? The psalmist was right, “How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony.” Living in chaos, fighting, and fussing with other people robs the joy out of life. Most of the disharmony in our life comes when we take our eyes off of Jesus and start focusing on lesser things. Jesus is the bringer of peace. He says, “My peace I give unto to you, my peace I leave with you.” If you are looking for harmony and peace in your life, then just keep your eyes on Jesus. –Dr. Tim Thompson
