READ: Psalm 55
Do you know people who won’t go to church because they have had a bad experience where they were hurt by some Christian? Let’s be honest:
eventually, this happens to everyone. Jesus was betrayed by Judas. In this psalm, David laments that someone who used to sing right next to him in worship has now betrayed him. His friend has become his enemy. It’s enough to make David want to get out of town, forsake the temple, and fly like a bird to the desert.
However, ultimately David knows that the solution to dealing with the hurts of a former friend is not to run away and hide. It is to call upon God all the more. Instead of leaving worship, David says he will triple up and pray “morning, noon, and night.” People will let you down, but if you “cast your burden on the Lord, He will sustain you.”
Prayer Focus: Pray for those who have been hurt by other Christians to experience healing. Then renew your own commitment to love and serve your fellow “messy mortals” both inside and outside the church.
