In John 5, this paralyzed man has been sick for 38 years. Jesus sees him and asks, “Would you like to get well?” The man says, “Well, I would, but I don’t have anyone to help me into the pool” (it supposedly has healing powers). Jesus does not accept the man’s excuses, join his pity party, or pick him up and put him in the pool. Instead he asks him a question of personal responsibility, “Do you want to get well? If you do, today is the day and now is the time. Get up. Take up your stuff and walk.” And that is what he did; he got unstuck.
God can help you get unstuck, too. There is no place in your life where you are stuck that it is beyond God’ power to get you unstuck. He takes great delight in delivering us from those places where we are stuck, and in moving us back to a positive, victorious, upbeat kind of life. But we have a part to play in the delivery process. There comes a time when we have to stop whining, stop placing blame, and stop feeling sorry for ourselves, and listen to the word of God and get up and walk.
