When we were growing up most of us learned certain phrases to use when a friend or a group would challenge us as to whether or not we were lying or telling the truth. I don’t know what phrases you learned to say when people challenged your truthfulness, but I learned sayings like this, “Cross my heart and hope to die; stick a needle in my eye.” I have no idea what that meant, but that was an oath I would say to people whoever challenged me whenever I was telling a story. We learned to say things like, “Ah, man, no; honest to God; this is true; I’ll swear on a stack of Bibles.” We just wanted people to know we were telling the truth. Truth is important. Truth is a very soft pillow to lie on at night. If you tell the truth, you never have to worry about someone finding you out as a fraud. If you just keep your promises, you’ll have a better life. Be a person of truth. Tell the truth. Life will be better if you do. The Psalmist says it well, “He who speaks the truth from his heart will never be shaken.”
