Reversing the Order
May 24, 2016
READ: John 13: 5-17
This story always stuns me. Jesus, the Son of God, the Savior of the world, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords got down on His hands and knees and washed His disciples’ feet. What a menial task for a Savior, but then this was a Savior unlike any other. This Savior was a servant. He was poor in spirit. He got the basic principle of life down—that life was not about Him. He never let His ego or pride get in the way. He lived, He served, He died, to make our lives better, to bring us the best for all eternity.
People are happy and blessed when, like Jesus, they keep things in their proper order. It is God, others, and then self. We get messed up when we reverse the order and it becomes me, others, and God. Pride, putting ourselves first, is a prerequisite for a life of misery. Putting God and others first, humility, is a prerequisite for happiness. Humility is the Jesus way. There are very few problems in this world, in your family, in our city, that could not be solved if we would just take a bowl of water and a towel and wash one another’s feet. Live to make life better for others. Whose feet do you need to wash today?
