The Biscuit Bowl

READ: John 15:9-17
At the After-Rehearsal dinner for our daughter’s wedding, dessert had been cleared and one by one, friends and family members had stood and shared some small remembrance, told a funny tale, and expressed love that had grown over years of experiences. The last to speak was Ike’s aunt and uncle who lived on the Baker farm. They told Ike they were giving him one of the most precious things they owned, and they handed him an average-looking, metal bowl. It wasn’t shiny or expensive looking. In fact, it had dings on the sides. We didn’t understand the significance, until Ike took the bowl, raised it for all of us to see, grinned and said, “Every memory I have of my grandmother includes a day when she made biscuits in this bowl.”
I love that Dorothy is marrying into a family that cherishes a biscuit bowl.
What we value tells a lot about who we are on the inside. If you value money, status, influence, and respect more than you value your relationship with Jesus and your relationship with your family and friends, then you are very, very poor in God’s kingdom. Be rich in what matters. Be rich in love.
