The Word of the Year
November 28, 2015
John 1:14, 16-18 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
The Oxford Dictionaries have named their “word of the year” for 2015, only it’s not a word. It’s an emoji, one of those little faces people use to convey feelings in text messages. In particular, it’s the one that shows a face crying two huge tears of joy. They say it’s most commonly used as an alternative for LOL. I’m still learning about all this text messaging stuff. Just recently I learned that LOL stands for “laughing out loud,” not “lots of love.” So, I may not know how to use emoji’s, but I get the point: Emoji’s remind us that sometimes words aren’t enough; sometimes we have to have a face. A crying face, a happy face, or an angry face sometimes says more than words alone. God knew this. That’s why, even though His written word is perfect, God chose to do more than write us a book. He sent his Son. Jesus walked and talked among us. He ate with us and touched us. He even shed tears. God put on skin and dwelt among us, so we would know that He is love. Then He acted out that love by dying on a cross for you and for me. You could say that Jesus is God’s emoji. That makes Him more than the word of the year, Jesus is the Word of all eternity.
