Ecclesiastes 3:1 “To everything there is a season, a time
to every purpose under the heavens.”
I was reading about a philanthropist who lived in New Orleans who told about how one night in the middle of winter she was going through a magazine and her eyes were caught by a cartoon. In it two ragged old women were shivering over a meager fire. “What cha thinking about?” asked one. “About the nice warm clothes the rich ladies will give us next summer,” answered the other. Now this generous woman, a donor to many charities, looked at that cartoon for a long time. Finally, she went up into her attic, unpacked some trunks, and made bundles of warm clothes to be distributed the next day. She resolved to time her charity better, to give, as she put it, to the ones whose needs are now. The lesson is true, “To everything there is a season and there is a time to every purpose under the heavens.” Others don’t need our help, our encouragement, our wisdom, our love, our generosity tomorrow. They need it today. If you have been thinking about calling somebody, writing a note of encouragement, supporting a missionary, visiting a shut-in, or doing something generous for someone else, do it today. Remember that seasons come, but they also go. What do you need to do to make someone else’s
life better in the season of today? Go and do it.
