READ: Psalm 92
Since I am fast approaching old age status, I am thinking more and more about things I have never thought a whole lot about before—pension funds, retirement, health care—and I am watching senior citizens more closely to see how they are going through life.
I watch the lives of some who are growing older whose lives are filled with such joy, delight, and hope for the future in spite of difficulties. On the other hand, I have seen people grow old and turn into grumpy, complaining, and miserable old people.
I want to be a part of that first group. The psalm says, “For in old age they will still produce fruit; they remain vital and green.” I want to be a fruit producer. I want to stay green. There are plenty of diet plans and exercise plans and mental games that promise to keep older people fresh and alive, but the psalmist teaches that the real key is the same for an older person as it is for a younger one: a life is centered in worshipping and praising God. When you are centered in God, He will have you centered in the right things. He will have you centered in hope, centered in love, centered in joy, centered in serving others.
