Corrie Ten Boom, when she was a young woman, was taken along with her sister to a German concentration camp. There she was stripped of her clothes, her dignity, and her freedom. She experienced unspeakable horrors. She watched friends be tortured, raped, and killed. She wrote of the time when she was surrounded by so much suffering that she was overwhelmed with hopelessness and despair. Her sister, Betsy, so strong in her faith, spoke to her and said, “Corrie, though the pit is deep, God is deeper still.”
What a great word. God does not always shield us from despair and pain, but neither does He abandon us in our suffering. Don’t let go of God. The pit may be deep, but God is deeper still. Even if you are only holding on by your fingernails, don’t let go. remember, God took the darkness of the suffering and death of Jesus on a cross and brought from it the joy and victory of resurrection to new life. He can and will do the same for you. The pit you are in may be deep, but God is deeper still. With Jesus, no matter how dark it gets, the darkness will never win.
