One of the great spiritual truths is that God’s purpose is bigger than those He calls to accomplish it. Jonah was a reluctant prophet. He did not want to go and preach to the Ninevites. When He did, and God used his words to turn them back to God, Jonah got mad. He believed they deserved Hell, not mercy.
Isn’t it interesting that God used Jonah’s messiness, sinfulness and reluctance to bring new life to an entire city? God’s purpose is bigger than those He calls to accomplish it. Through the years the Christian church has been able to withstand scandals and wars and divisions and fallen preachers and bad theology, and yet it continues to be God’s primary instrument through which His work gets done in this world. That is because God’s purpose is bigger than those He calls to accomplish it.
We all are human; we are less than perfect. We are messy mortals, but God can still use you and me to be difference makers in this world for Him. When we are obedient, we will discover that God’s purpose is bigger than those He calls to accomplish it. That is good news!
