One of the names of Satan is “the Accuser.” Like a prosecuting attorney, he is pictured as bringing the case against mankind, pointing out all of our sins and using them to maintain his power over us. The power of the cross frees us from Satan’s grip. Because Jesus died in our place, Paul tells the Colossians that the warrant for our arrest was nailed to a tree, blotted out by the blood of Christ. What is more, through the same cross Jesus triumphed over the powers of darkness. The accuser now stands defeated.
But the victory is only through the cross. When the accuser comes against us, we cannot answer him by denying that we are sinners. Instead, we simply refer him back to the cross, and walk on in freedom.
