What does Peter mean when he says that by Jesus’ wounds, we are healed? Healed of sickness? Yes, some of us find healing now, and all believers will in eternity, where there is no more sickness and no more death. But even more than being healed from our sickness, it is by his wounds that we are healed from our sin. He died so that we too might die to sin. And being dead to sin, we live for righteousness.
A new “life-force” flows through us, one that has no more desire to sin, one that is immune to temptation. We are not yet made perfect; we still falter and fail. But we are no longer doomed to sin. We can rise above it. We can live righteous, pure, blameless, and holy in God’s sight, because by his wounds our inmost souls have been healed. That is the power of the cross.
