Idols are everywhere. In I Kings the idols were called ‘Baal.’ They were false gods. Elijah had to battle with these idols.
We have always had things in our lives that we have valued way out of proportion to their value in comparison to our relationship to God. A job can become more than a job, a hobby more that a hobby, a relationship more that a relationship, an exercise program more than an exercise program.
It might be a good thing today to take the idol test. Ask yourself these questions: What do you most highly value in life? As you go through the course of your day, what do you find your mind flitting back to again and again? What do you think about by default? Whom or what do you like the most? Whom or what do you most delight in or hold as your greatest joy and treasure? For whom or what do you get the most excited?
At the end of that trail, you will find a throne and on that throne is what you worship. The most important thing you can do in your life is to love God more than you love anything else. When you do that, the order and priorities of your life will be in place and you will find the best.
