The writer of Ecclesiastes says it well: “to everything there is a season.”
David is to follow Saul as the next king of Israel. As their story unfolds, Saul feels threatened by David and does everything he can to get rid of him. Saul oppresses, persecutes, and attempts to murder David on numerous occasions. Amidst all of the mistreatment by Saul, David remains humble in his position as “king in waiting.”
In 1 Samuel 24 and 26, David has two opportunities to kill Saul. In both instances David refuses to take Saul’s life even though others are encouraging him to do so. David knows that it’s not his time to be king over all of Israel. Who is your Saul? Have you ever had someone in your life whom you feel is holding you back, standing in your way, keeping you from what is rightfully yours? Maybe it’s your boss, a co-worker, a parent, or a friend.
Whomever it may be, remember that taking matters into your own hands only makes a mess of things. Like David, wait for the right season. God’s timing is always right on time. Timing is everything!
