Moses grew up in Egypt. One day he is standing around, observes a fight, gets involved and ends up killing an Egyptian. He tries to bury the guy in the sand, hoping no one would know, but he is found out. He runs. He becomes a fugitive. He leaves as one of “Egypt’s top ten most wanted,” hides out in the desert and becomes a sheep farmer.
One day he is out caring for the sheep when he sees the strange sight of one bush on fire. What is even stranger is that the bush talks. It calls him by name. It is the voice of God! He says to Moses, “take off your shoes and sit a spell, we need to talk. I know you have dirt between your toes and you are trying to hide some dirt from your past, but this is holy ground and I have got a holy mission for you to do for me.”
Some folks think they are too messed up, too sinful, too guilty for God to give them a passing glance. They would never expect God to show up and say, “sit a spell, we need to talk.” It is good news that you don’t have to get cleaned up first in order to have an audience with God. God meets you where you are. The place where you are standing or sitting right now is holy ground. God is there. He wants to have a little talk with you. Are you listening?
