You have heard it said, “Blood is thicker than water.” And most of the time this saying refers to the strong bonds of family. More specifically, our immediate family takes precedent and all others fall in line behind them.
As Jesus enters into our story, though, suddenly “family” is redefined. No longer is your father, mother, brother, or sister the main focus of family. No longer are you concerned with merely the cares and concerns of your immediate relatives. No longer are you merely looking out for your family’s benefit.
Unless, of course, you understand the paradigm shift Jesus has made concerning your family. “Who is your family”, you ask? It is the family of God. It is not all that different from asking, “Who is my neighbor?” Your new family is made up of all types of people, from all walks of life. After all, “blood is thicker than water” for sure. In this case, it is the blood of Jesus Christ that we claim a new family, an eternal family!
