Last week, police in Alhambra, California, reported that they had reunited a 150-lb. pet turtle with its family after pleas had gone out to the community to help find the lost critter. I’m not sure how that happened; turtles aren’t known for speed, and one that weighs as much as a grown man can’t be too hard to spot. To paraphrase something I once heard our Children’s Ministry Director, Theresa Reiter, say to a child, “If your pet turtle runs away, you may not be paying very much attention to it!” Sometimes in our walk with Christ, we find ourselves in a place where we realize we have drifted away from God and lost our first love for Him. How is it possible to “lose” God? The same way you lose a 150-lb. turtle—by not paying attention. Everyone has worries, but we either choose to take those worries to God on a daily basis, or we allow them to become distractions. Distracted disciples become drifting disciples, and before we know it our hearts have grown cold to Christ. Pay attention to your walk with God daily, so you don’t lose your first love.
