READ: Philippians 3:12-14
Gwenivierre Mann is a young woman in New York City who suffers from short term memory loss due to complications from a brain tumor removal surgery. It’s a difficult life: she has to carry a notecard with her and record when she eats a meal or she may accidentally eat twice. However, she has found positives from her experience. For example, she ran in the NYC Marathon with her boyfriend. She asked him to not let her look at any of the mile markers, and if she asked him how long they had been running, to just keep telling her, “only 10 or 15 minutes.” The trick worked, and she was able to complete the 26.2 mile race without giving up because she never realized how long she had been going.
Sometimes we need a little self-imposed “memory loss.” Paul tells us, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” He was not willing to let past failures keep him from moving ahead, or to let past accomplishments keep him from new challenges. Memory is a good thing, but don’t let it keep you from God’s beautiful future for your life.
