A crucial part of the spiritual renewal that was occurring in the people of Israel under the leadership of Nehemiah was their commitment to put God first in all of their life, including their financial and material life. They made a promise to honor God’s teaching and God’s word. They promised to give to the work of the Lord first, to bring the best they had to Him, not the
leftovers, and they promised to tithe.
Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21) Nothing reveals what is the priority of our lives more that what is written in our checkbooks. It is not possible to have complete fellowship with God and to receive all of the beautiful blessings that God has for our lives and not have our money reflect that.
Jesus said, “We cannot serve two masters.” (Matthew 6:24) Put the Lord first financially. Always be obedient to His word. God will bless your obedience, and He will supply what you need. Are you missing some of the Lord’s best blessings because you are not obedient to what God’s word says about finances?
