Gorman Houston wrote about these verses from Galatians, “What saddens me is that while we have inherited precious freedom, won at great cost by brave men and women in a variety of venues, we have proven ourselves to be poor soldiers in the fight for freedom. We have used our freedom as an opportunity for self indulgence, and we actually imprison ourselves through sin, addiction, guilt and fear. We end up not being free at all.”
Paul knew something about bondage and freedom. He wrote, “For freedom Chris has set us free.” He understood that no government by itself can make anyone free: anyone who is dependent solely upon the law for freedom will not achieve it. But Jesus Christ is in the liberating business.
True freedom is a matter of the soul. It is the spirit that makes us free. When we give up trying to control everything and everyone around us, and simply allow Christ to have his way, we experience freedom. No longer bound by hatred, envy, strife, anxiety, selfishness, dishonesty, and anger, we are free to live with love, joy, peace, patience, self control, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and gentleness. Now that is freedom worth celebrating
