When David fell into the double sin of adultery and murder, the prophet Nathan knew exactly how to get his attention: with a story about a man who senselessly destroys a precious little lamb. David, the “shepherd king”, is furious, until he realizes that the story is really about him.
How did this shepherd with a heart after God become so hardened that he would commit these sins? In a nutshell, the old saying, “power corrupts.” Once he became king and defeated his enemies, David lost the urgency of his need for God, and forgot that life is “not about me.”
The more power, authority, success and blessing God gives you, the more wary you must remember that power corrupts. When whatever you want is at your fingertips, beware lest you grasp your own destruction.
Finally, notice what saved David from becoming completely lost: his friendship with Nathan. Whom have you allowed to speak into your life, to hold you accountable in your walk of faith? Be sure you have a Nathan who can remind you of your love for God’s sheep
