1 Samuel 16:1-13
The prophet Samuel played a significant role in Ancient Israel. Most notably, Samuel anointed God’s chosen leaders for the people. He was a kingmaker! Thus, God told Samuel to visit Jesse in Bethlehem. One by one, Jesse brought seven of his sons in front of Samuel, according to whom he thought was fit to be king–based on birth order, good looks, and perceived ability. Each one passed by Samuel without a word from the Lord. It was the eighth son–who was considered so unimportant his father had left him out tending to the flock–that Samuel anointed as the next king of Israel.

When picking a leader, we tend to use the wrong criteria. The previous king, Saul, stood a foot taller than any other man, so everyone thought he would be a great leader; yet his rebelliousness toward God had led him to disaster. God through Samuel looked upon the heart. David had developed a heart for God and a heart poised for leadership. He was God’s choice for leadership. Picking a good leader requires the right criteria. As you look for leaders in your life, what criteria will you use?
