Too often, we fall into the trap of thinking that money is our source of happiness.
We know money cannot buy happiness, but I heard someone say once, “it sure helps!” If we’re honest, most of us will head off to work today, expecting that if we have more money, we’ll have a little more happiness, and if we have less money, we’ll have a little less happiness.
So what do we do with Paul’s words to the Philippians? What does Paul mean
when he says, “Not that I was ever in need?” Paul is sharing an important lesson – money is not the source. Neither our riches, our possessions, or our c omforts
will ever provide us with complete security, safety, or significance. Paul’s secret to being content is found in verse 13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” For Paul, contentment is not about “more”, it’s about “enough”! Paul is describing a life that is always enough because of Christ, no matter the circumstances. Money will never tell us life is sufficient with what we have. Money will always tell us we need more. With Christ, we can learn to be content in all things, in all ways, to the end of our days.
