Our society propagates the idea that we “own” things. We say it all the time. “I own this car. I own this shirt. I own this house. I own this furniture. I own this computer.” We believe we own them because we bought them with “our” money (or at least the bank’s money). My money, my stuff.
Yet in Luke 12:48 Jesus says, “to whom much is given, much is required.” Focus on the word “given” for a moment. Most of us believe that we have earned the money in our bank accounts. We worked for this money! But today’s verse says that ultimately our resources have been “given” to us, not earned.
Who is the giver? Right! God is the giver. And if God is the giver, then all the money belongs to God, and so does the stuff we buy with the money. So how much do we own? Right! Not one dollar is ours. Instead, we are stewards of God’s money.
So, how are you spending God’s money? If we are not good stewards, perhaps instead of “two whom much is given,” Jesus would we are those whom “too much is given.”
