We arrived at Port au Prince this afternoon with no problems. Beautiful view from the air of the island of Hispanola! On the ground, we witnessed up-close, earthquake rubble and trash pushed to the sides of the road, and hundreds of makeshift tents, some as small as a pup tent, erected along the roadside–people everywhere with barely an inch between tent flaps. Somehow they prepare meals, sleep, bathe and dress. Our friendly driver skillfully manuvered in and around deep potholes through a narrow, rocky alley, while dodging goats, chickens and little children. This path brought us to a lovely oasis called “New Life”, a walled-in orphanage run by American Christians, who have answered God’s call to help the little children. We have loved holding some of these children during an outdoor worship time, singing many of the same praise songs we sing at home in our contemporary services. Walking back to our rooms later, Aimee Conn, age 12, said how she loved it here and wanted to stay and help the children. We have prayed that God will change us and reveal Himself to us on this trip. I believe that has already begun.
In fact, God started revealing himself before we had left Montgomery through friends who called, emailed, and brought stickers and items for the kids. We had just stopped an unsuccessful search for Aimee’s wallet that was misplaced during the packing process–it held the money she had saved for Haiit. A neighbor stopped us to wish us Godspeed and to give Aimee a gift for her trip–it was exactly the cash amount she had misplaced. Many more blessings have been coming our way and we’re eagerly anticipating seeing God in action in Haiti!
Well, we had a cold shower, which was quite refreshing and we’re ready to go to bed. Sorry no pics tonight–tomorrow we hope to find what we need to download from the camera!
Our team consists of 2 Frazer families, Mike, Lisa and Aimee Conn and John, Mitzi, and Morgan Fleming. We are led by Margaret Spratlin and her husband of 30 years, Chandler, joined us for his very first mission trip! Our group seems to be very cohesive and united in our mission to build relationships here and show Jesus’ love however we can.
Praise the Lord!!!! Keep us posted!!! All is well in Montgomery!!!We’re praying for you!!!
