Afterwards we had a delicious breakfast prepared by the Hinton Cook Team and afterwards we attended a short worksite orientation and video prepared
by the members of the staff. These young people did a fabulous job.
We finally got to our worksite about 10:00 A.M. this morning (we were about 1 hour late). Our group has been assigned to build a deck on the front
of a NEW house in a housing development owned by the Hinton Center. Funding for these houses is acquired through the USDA and the Hinton Center Staff
recruits people who may be qualified for low income housing through this program. They say that it takes a really long time to get someone qualified
for the program because of all the Gov. red tape and bureaucracy. The house that we are working on has about 2,500 sq. feet of living space and
it has a basement that will be totally finished to make it a two story dwelling. A single lady will live there with 5 other relatives (grandchildren). She is a retired
from her job, but works part time to make ends meet. This program is sort of like “Habitat for Humanity”
We will meet the family tomorrow and spend some time with them at the worksite. Each person (family) who is awarded a contract for one of these houses is
required to physically work on the property during the building process in order to qualify for the program.
As part of our work, we finished framing the deck today and squaring it up. Tomorrow we will finish nailing in the floor joists, and pouring the
concrete footings for the support posts to be put into place. On Wednesday, we should be able to finish the decking and complete the project as planned.
During today’s work, Ron operated the skill saw and cut the boards to the needed length. Connie and Tina did the measuring and also helped position the boards to be nailed in the correct position. John made sure that the boards were square before they were cut, and he also helped crown the boards, re-checked
measurements and held them into place to be nailed. I operated the air operated nail gun and nailed the boards into place when they were ready. We all
had something to do and we worked together as a TEAM. We look forward to meeting the family tomorrow and sharing with them to earn more about their families.
After returning to the Hinton center from the work site, we had another great meal prepared by the Hinton Staff. After supper, Connie lead our team in a devotion time and our team took about an hour to share personal testimonies and to bond with one another more. We really have a good team. We are
few in numbers, but there is quality here!
Thanks to each of you for your prayers and concerns. We will post comments again tomorrow and keep you informed about our activities.
In Christ name,
Ron, John, Tina, Connie, and Jimmy
