to do a little shopping at WAL-MART. The Hinton Center is a beautiful Methodist Church Center nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, just two miles north of the Georgia state line and fifteen miles east of Murphy. It overlooks beautiful Lake Chatuge and offers a great view for one to
experience. We sat on a huge covered porch early this morning, while drinking our coffee, and rocking in our chairs. It was great!
We attended church services at Oak Forest United Methodist this morning, and heard a wonderful sermon presented by Pastor Jacob Kyker, entitled “Developing a Heart for God”. We all enjoyed the music and the fellowship with people in the congregation after church.Afterwards , we went into Hayesville and had a wonderful lunch at a locally owned restaurant. It was really good food.
We finally had our group orientation this afternoon about our mission and the work site we will be working at. Our team will be doing light construction at a new housing development for low income families, sort of like “Habitat for Humanity”. We met our construction leader today when we attended church at
Oak Forest United Methodist Church. This camp is for all ages, but it is really oriented for large youth groups with an adult chaperones. That does not mean that adult groups are not encouraged to come, because they are. There are a lot of young people on the staff and they do a wonderful job in organizing the activities. This staff of young people did a fantastic job of presenting our evening worship service after our orientation session and supper.
We had a wonderful supper tonight and afterwards had a team meeting and devotional. Things are going well and every team member has a specific job to accomplish during the week. By the way, we had to perform a group skit at our orientation today in order to introduce ourselves. Tina Bowlin and Connie Daniel put together a script and got some props for us to use. We did a fishing skit with fishing rods etc. Tina and Connie even made some fish out of construction paper and we held them up on a stringer. In the end we said that we did not come here on vacation or even to fish, but to be “Fishers of Men”.
I think our skit went well and people enjoyed it. It was really a cute idea.
Tomorrow morning, Monday, we will go to our work site to meet our host family and to start our construction work. We will leave about 7:30 A.M. going to the
work site and we will knock off about 3:30 P.M. each day to spend some time with the family we are assigned to and to get them involved with programs
at the Hinton Center this week.
Anyway, we are having a good experience, meeting new people, and working to help others. I will try to keep you posted each day about our activities. Please keep us in your prayers, because you never know when that old hungry lion will will come around roaring, and trying to devour us!
In Christ,
Ron, John, Tina, Connie & Jimmy
