After talking about our daughters’ common name, he asked where we were from. I told him we came from Alabama. He was amazed that people would drive all the way from Alabama to serve and interact with the residents in a Newark housing project. He said that the residents should be coming out to participate. He then said, “No offense, but some of my friends wouldn’t come over because it was just a bunch of white folks”. I told him our group loved serving others regardless of the color of their skin. We talked about how that really wasn’t what was important.
Afterwards, I thought about how it was only adults who considered skin color. It was clear that the kids, especially the little ones, did not have that “barrier” to overcome. This showed me just how important it is to serve others and spread the love of God that is so plentiful and apparent in our little world in Montgomery.
