First, let me say we made it! We took the Frazer bus to Atlanta, about two hours or so. There we caught the first of two flights early Friday afternoon. The first flight to Miami took about two hours or so. The second to Lima, Peru took about six hours and then we climbed on another bus to make the “eight” hour ride on the Pan American Highway to Trujillo. The bus ride was bumpy in spots and smooth in others but ended up taking almost eleven hours.
Second, one of our team members was not able to make the trip with us; Ellyn we miss you and hope you get well quickly.
Now, the team is settling into our rooms and getting acquainted. I can’t believe how quickly we’ve jelled into a cohesive group. Our mission this week is to support Martin Reeves in his local ministries. We made our first trip almost as soon as we arrived. The team went with Martin and his Trujillo ministry team to El Milagro. More on that visit tomorrow.
You’ve read some of our pre-flight blogs. Now our first real blog starts and originated in Atlanta.
As we unloaded the bus at Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport and checked our luggage for the flight to Miami, a sense of peace settled on our team. We realized God was with us and for us in this journey. We checked in and cleared security and only one team member’s bags were inspected. Then realizing we had to clear international Customs in Lima and given the nature of some the articles in our luggage, the team began a joke which sparked an idea for a mission trivia question for Frazer!
What do panties, pencils, and power tools have in common?
Anyone know the answer? And, NO Dr. Tim and Pastor Patrick, this is not an X-rated blog! All three items are necessary equipment for a mission team. Our luggage contained a mixture of articles. The Peru team packed enough pencils, crayons, beads, costume jewelry, and toys for 1200 children. We also packed sewing kits, baby aspirin, and band aids, for 300 Moms. Screws, battery operated saws, and drills to build a Community kitchen that will feed Oatmeal to more than 40 children a day. We also packed enough toothbrushes so every child gets his/her own rather than use the “family” toothbrush!
Oh, yes, I almost forgot; the panties (underwear for us men). Well, those are our personal clothes which were mixed in with the items listed above. We each packed two bags under 50 lbs and they were full! Hopefully, we were able to pack enough to wear a fresh pair everyday!!
