The words of Paul really speak to me when he says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up.” What a difference it would make in this world if we would follow that godly advice. There is an old saying, “Before you speak, ask three questions: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?”
First, before you speak a rumor, ask yourself, “Do I know for sure it’s true?” If you are not willing to stake your character, your reputation, and your integrity on the truth of what you are about to say, then do not say it.
Second, even if you know something is true, is it necessary that you repeat it? Will it do good, will it be helpful?
Third, is what you are going to say about another person going to encourage, affirm, edify, or make a situation of a person better or is it going to hurt, harm, and cut someone down? Is it kind?
I believe we could add a fourth question: Is it Christlike? Is it worthy of Christ? Does it reflect who He is? Will God be honored and glorified? Use these four questions as a pre-flight before you speak, and see what a difference it makes in your world.
