Yesterday, five cardinals flew into our den window. The first bird died. The other four lay stunned for several minutes before flying off. Virginia hung aluminum pie pans in the window, hoping to warn the birds of the danger. By the fourth whamming, she had duct taped a sheet and two newspapers over the window. All were attempts to warn the birds of the danger of flying into the window.
Sometimes when we sin, we fly into danger we didn’t see. But, too many of our sins occur when we look at God and say, “I know what you want Lord, but I want to do this my way.” God warns us about the dangers of sin through a God-given conscience, His Word, the Holy Spirit who ‘checks’ our spirit, and through Christian friends, parents, and teachers. When we repeatedly turn away from God, He will eventually back away and say, “OK, do it your way.” When that happens, we will hit a wall, and spiral downward. It hurts us and it saddens God when we sin. Pray for sensitivity to His Word and to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and willing ears and a heart to listen to those who love us. Don’t fly like a careless bird.
