The Bumblebee
May 13, 2016
READ: Romans 12:9-21
Lilias Trotter tells of watching a bumblebee at work in her book, A Blossom in the Desert. Trotter reflects on how our Christian work seems to be so ineffective compared to the life of Jesus, the One who gave His life for us. But as she watches the bumblebee, she realizes that as it goes about its daily tasks, touching flower after flower after flower, that it leaves behind a touch of ‘life’ in the pollen it carries. From work to school to the mailbox to the store, as we go about our daily tasks from place to place, God intends for us, like the bumblebee, to leave something behind, some small touch of Christ’s love. It doesn’t have to be much: a prayer for the stranger standing beside you, or a kind word. Christians are to leave a touch of grace with every person we meet. It doesn’t seem like much. The effort seems so little for the One who gave His life for us all. But, much like the bumblebee, God uses our small touches to spread grace—to spread His life—from person to person to person.
