Loud Heartbeat

Daniel 5:23 – “You have praised the gods of silver and gold which do not see or hear or know.
But the God in whose power is your very breath and to whom belong all your ways you do not honor.” Thomas Troger wrote, “It was not a loud noise, but it was a persistent bang, bang, bang. ‘Oh no’, I prayed in desperation, ‘Whatever that noise is shut that thing off.’ I figured it was a noisy forced-air heating vent or maybe it was construction worker, but just having woken from the anesthetic I wanted it to stop. Bang, bang, bang, ‘Lord, shut that noise off.’ And then I realized the noise was from the new artificial heart valve the surgeon had just implanted in me. Quickly, I prayed, ‘Oh Lord, cancel that first prayer.’ The doctor warned me before the operation that it might sound loud at first until you get used to it. Ever since I first heard that sound I have awakened each morning to pray, ‘Thank you, God, for my heart is beating.’” What would happen in our lives if we prayed that prayer every day? Because every beat of our heart is a gift from God. Your heart beats 60-70 times a minute, 4000 beats an hour, 90,000 beats a day, 672,000 beats a week, and depending upon the level of your activity, your heart can beat a million times a week. This power source is free. You never get a bill for your heart beat. Every beat of your heart is a gift. It comes from God whose power is seen in your very breath. The mere fact of our existence is an unearned, mysterious, incredible, awesome gift. I hope you will make the decision to honor God by living with a grateful heart. Have you thanked God for the gift of your breath today?
