A Good Laugh
November 5, 2015
Proverbs 17:22 “A cheerful disposition is good for your health. Gloom and doom leave you bone tired.”
I love to laugh. I’ve always loved to laugh. I think I got it from my momma. She had such a cheerful disposition and she was so much fun to be around and she could find something funny in almost anything. Sometimes we take ourselves and we take life far too seriously. A good laugh makes you feel better. I always thought laughter was good for you. Now I know for sure. Did you know that Vanderbilt University Medical Center did a study on laughter and found that laughter raises energy expenditures and increases heart rate 10-20 percent? Ten to fifteen minutes of laughter increase energy expenditure by 10-40 calories per day, which could translate into about four pounds a year. What that says to me is, as long as I laugh while I am eating ice cream, I can still be losing weight. Somehow I don’t think that was the point they wanted us to get from that study. I do know that God created us with all kinds of emotions. Sometimes you need a good cry, and that releases a lot of pent-up feelings. But often times what we need is a good, hearty belly laugh. Laugh a little bit every day. The more you fill your life with laughter the more you will keep from having a sour, bitter disposition. Mark Twain once said, “Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand.” Have a good laugh today.
