The Good News You’ll Never See on TV
September 30, 2015
1 Corinthians 15:58 “So, my brothers and sisters, be strong and steady, always enthusiastic about the Lord’s work, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.”
It’s always interesting to see what stories the news channels will obsess over. One thing is a guarantee: they will usually focus on negative events. Ratings are the main goal, and good news simply does not get enough viewers. You’ll never hear a story about a group of adults who spent a whole week serving in places like Peru, Haiti, rural Kentucky, Brazil, or Kenya. You’ll never hear about individuals building wheel chair ramps each week around our city. The news will never give a report about people packing backpacks for school children that need food on the weekends. You’ll rarely read about our volunteers who are rebuilding houses and mentoring kids in the Garden Square neighborhood. These acts of service seem very small and unimportant when compared to the latest political scandal, debt crises, and celebrity divorce. Yet, most of these news stories being reported today will be quickly forgotten. And most of these stories have very little eternal significance and minimal effect on God’s redemptive purposes. But from God’s perspective, one act of love from one person has incredible importance and worth. One soul saved and one person served makes all of heaven rejoice! It is such a privilege to be a part of a church that has a heart for serving others. I am very excited about what our church is doing and what it will do in the future. As a pastor, there is no greater joy then witnessing our church family take part in God’s redemptive mission. God is working and active in profound ways around our world…it’s just that most of the time it doesn’t make the headlines.
