Ephesians 2:21-22 “In [Christ] the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.”
There’s a trend across our nation. As younger generations abandon traditional faith, many churches are closing, and now many folks are buying their empty buildings to convert them into houses. There are whole Pinterest pages devoted to sharing design ideas on how to transform a sanctuary into a living room. Even celebrities like Johnny Depp, Beyonce, and Katy Perry are getting in on the action. The irony is and maybe the reason these churches closed in the first place is that we’ve forgotten what a church is. We call the church building the “house of God,” but God does not live in a building made by human hands. God has chosen to dwell in the humble and repentant hearts of His children. A church is not a building, a church is people—people who have a living relationship with God. The Bible says to those who follow Jesus Christ by faith, you are the house of God. You, individually and collectively, are the temple of God. His Spirit lives in you. I don’t know if I would buy a church building to transform it into a house. But I’m positive it would transform your life if you discovered that you were created to be a house for God. Don’t just “go to church.” Be the church. Open up your heart to be Christ’s home
