I Thessalonians 5:11 “Therefore encourage one
another and build each other up.”
The word appreciation literally means “to raise the value.” When something appreciates, it rises in value, whether it be stocks, bonds, or houses. When you depreciate something, it loses its value. This is true not only of things but of people as well. When you appreciate someone and encourage them, you literally raise their value, and you also raise your own spirit when you lift up someone else. We are called by God to live as appreciators, encouragers of others. I love Paul’s words of encouragement to the people of Philippi, “I thank my God every time I remember you.” That’s appreciation. I Thessalonians 5:11 says, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” Appreciation builds people up; depreciation tears people down. Ephesians 4:29 says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth (depreciation), but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs that it may benefit those who listen (appreciation).” Everyone blossoms under the encouragement that comes from gratitude and appreciation. In a world full of put-downs, criticisms, gossip, and trash talking, people are desperate to hear kind words, uplifting words. Never pass up an opportunity to partner with God and build up someone else. Never pass up the opportunity to express a word of gratitude. Partner with God in the miracle of lifting up someone else’s life.
