Virginia and I were out of town at a leadership conference, and we left the gas grill on for the entire time. We have a two hundred gallon tank buried in the ground which also supplies gas to our hot water heaters and stove. Needless to say, we emptied the tank. Cold food and cold showers will cause me to be much more careful the next time. Jesus told the story about some wise and foolish bridesmaids. They were waiting up for the bridegroom to come and for the wedding to begin. Five bridesmaids were wise, and they brought extra oil for their lamps in case the bridegroom was late. The foolish bridesmaids had no extra oil, and when the bridegroom got delayed, they had run out of fuel. When they went out to get some more, the bridegroom came, and they ended up missing him. Sometimes we miss the presence of God in our midst because we have not prepared our hearts to see Him. When we neglect worship, devotional time or fellowship with other Christians, our spiritual oil will begin to run low. When that happens we often times are not there spiritually, and we miss it when God shows up for us. You don’t want to miss the Lord because you haven’t prepared your heart to be able to see Him. Worship, prayer, serving others, Christian fellowship, and quiet time with God everyday are not religious thing we do to get to heaven. They are what we do to keep our hearts prepared to be able to see God when He shows up for us.
