Luther Bridgers was an evangelist who spent many a night preaching, away from his wife and three boys. As you can imagine, when Luther came home, he was greeted with hugs and kisses from the four most important people in his life. One night, however, the phone rang in his hotel room with the tragic news: his home had burned down with his sleeping family all inside it.
Few people ever go through such pain as losing their entire family. What do you do when things go wrong? Do you disappear into the shadows of life? Get angry? Play the blame game? Ignore the reality of what happened? Instead, Luther found purpose by helping others who were suffering, sad, or in trouble. The secret of his strength can be found in a victorious song he wrote: “There’s within my heart a melody/Jesus whispers sweet and low,/Fear not, I am with thee, peace, be still,/In all of life’s ebb and flow./Jesus, Jesus, Jesus – sweetest name I know,/Fills my every longing, keeps me singing as I go.”
Now you know the story of what one man did when everything went wrong. Next time you are going through the valley sing your way through it. “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus – sweetest name I know, Fills my every longing, keeps me singing as I go!”
