What do you do when you get anxious, troubled, or hurt? What did Jesus do? He ran to the Lord, and He prayed it out. Jesus prayed. When Jesus was the most pressed, stressed, frustrated, and abused, He prayed. When He was making decisions, He prayed. When He was glad and happy and thankful, He prayed. Prayer was not an add-on part of His life. Prayer was a way of life for Jesus. I think it is interesting that the disciples only asked Jesus to teach them one thing. They never asked Him, “Lord, teach us how to preach, teach us about you, teach us the Bible, teach us how to teach, teach us how to evangelize, teach us how to be a godly parent or a godly spouse. The only thing they ever asked Him to teach them was, “Teach us how to pray.” Perhaps they saw the power and the peace that surrounded Jesus’ life, and they concluded that it came from prayer. They wanted what He had, that kind of deep relationship and connection with God. Ultimately, that is what prayer will do. It will connect your heart to the heart of God. Spend time everyday on your knees with God in prayer. When you pray, “Teach me how to pray, Lord,” what will happen is, through prayer, He will teach you how to live.
