When I heard Jesus tell a person to take the log out of his own eye before he should worry about the speck in his brother’s eye, I used to wonder how someone could tolerate a piece of wood in his eye, not even know it is there. Then I remembered putting on my first pair of hard contact lens. It was very uncomfortable, and I knew that something strange was in my eye. I wore the hard lens just a few hours the first day and a few more hours the second day. I added hours each day for two weeks, until I got used to the unfamiliar feeling of having something in my eye. Today, I don’t know I have something in my eyes. I have become so accustom to the lens, that I simply don’t feel them. We do this with the sins in our own lives. We are so quick to recognize sin in another person and yell, ‘foul,’ but we have desensitized ourselves to our own sin and guilt. In your quiet place, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal sins you need to confess. And when you are tempted to point a finger in accusation at another, first examine your own life. You might find a log. – Virginia Thompson
