David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart because of this giant. Your servant will go in fighting.” David knew that you can’t defeat a giant until you face the giant. Everybody battles with giants, that threaten to mess their lives up, to rob them of peace and joy. Giants show up everywhere, school rooms, doctor’s offices, hospital rooms, at work, from the lips of your spouse, or in nature’s horrible storms. What is your giant? Is it cancer, heart trouble, diabetes, divorce, pornography, sexual abuse, debt, a marriage that is sick, a habit that is destructive, an addiction? You have to be honest enough and brave enough to face your giant. David faced the giant named Goliath. You cannot defeat it until you face it. Healing starts when you stare your giants down. My father defeated the giant of cancer. Cancer killed his body, but cancer never defeated him. He faced it head on. He didn’t die with the news that he had terminal cancer. He lived until he died. In fact, he started a new Sunday school class at the assisted living facility after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He taught it until the week before he died. He defeated the giant. He knew Jesus Christ, so he knew if he died, cancer still didn’t win. Don’t ever forget giants can be defeated. The first step is to look your giant in the eye. As Max Lucado said, “Let your God thoughts outnumber your giant thoughts. Focus on the giant and you will stumble. Focus on God and the giant will tumble.”
