Psalm 139:23-24 is one of the most honest prayers of the Bible. It is hard to come clean, to be totally honest with ourselves. I remember when Virginia and I were packing our house to move here, we did the great clean-out and give-away. The thing about moving is that it forces you to clean out your closets. You find stuff you didn’t know you had and haven’t used in years. The hardest part of cleaning out my closet was cleaning that part where I keep my skinny clothes. Some of you have a section reserved for your skinny clothes. I guess I thought that if they hang there long enough that magically someday, somehow, some way I would fit in those britches again. I had to let them go. I had to be honest. I’m not fitting into those suits again. Every now and then, we all need to clean out our moral closet and look honestly at what we know about ourselves that we would be ashamed of if others knew. Jesus calls us to have a pure heart, but to have a pure heart you have to come clean. I encourage you today to pray Psalm 139:23-24, “God, search my heart and root out those things that are messing me up and keeping me from seeing you and finding the best.” Praying this prayer might be the most important thing you do for your life today
