One day years ago I was contemplating what this verse might mean: how can the “name of the Lord” be a “tower” and how can we “run into it”? At the time I worked for the newspaper, and I had a meeting with several department heads discussing our marketing strategy. I was making the case to do things one way, and I thought I had some pretty good arguments, but another manager had different ideas, and she was pushing back. Finally, she announced, “Scott wants us to do it this way.” Well, Scott was President and Publisher, so that was the end of the discussion. My ideas were out and hers were in because Scott’s name ended the debate.
I left that meeting pretty frustrated, until it struck me: that’s what the Bible verse meant! It’s as if God were saying to me, “I just showed you how it works.” The Name of the Lord ends all debate. The Name of the Lord ends all doubt. He is a strong tower, a defense against all attacks. When we feel that we are under pressure, we don’t have to defend ourselves. We can call upon the Name of the Lord, and be rescued.
