I was in line behind two people a few weeks ago. It was obvious the young lady behind the counter was new. She had apparently messed up the register while trying to help the person in front of her. She said very sweetly to the customer, “I’m so sorry; I’m new. I don’t know how to fix this mistake. I am calling a supervisor.” The person very rudely said, “Being new is no excuse. I don’t have time for this kind of incompetence.” And she stomped off. I thought the young girl was going to cry. The elderly lady in front of me stepped up and reached out and she patted the girl’s hand and said, “Honey, I used to work here, and I know how hard it is when you are first getting started, but I think you are doing just fine.” It was a simple word of kindness, but it made that young lady’s day. Every person you meet today is probably struggling with something, so just be kind. When you are kind to others, not only will you make their day, but you will make your day as well. The wisdom of God says it well in Proverbs 12:25, “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.”
