READ: JOHN 1: 5
The most difficult part of living out in the woods is the darkness. On cloudy nights under the canopy of trees, our house is so dark. I don’t like the dark. Bad things happen in the darkness. I don’t like to be kept in the dark.
Darkness is not just physical, sometimes it is emotional. We find ourselves living in the darkness of grief or despair or fear or loneliness or discouragement and disillusionment. But at Christmas time we are reminded of an amazing truth: no matter how dark it gets, the darkness doesn’t win. For there is a light born into this world in Jesus Christ that is more powerful than any darkness. John says of the birth of Jesus, “A light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot extinguish the light.” And that simply means where Jesus is, the darkness doesn’t win.
As I write this, I am looking out my office window at home. It is 10 p.m. and the woods are bright. There is a full moon out tonight, and the light is overpowering the darkness. In this Christmas season, remember the great truth that is found in the birth, the life, and the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ: that when you belong to Him the darkness doesn’t win.
